In 2012 La Palma became the world's first certified Starlight Reserve — protected by the world's first light-pollution law of 1988. On the Roque de los Muchachos, at 2,396 m, stands one of the world's most important observatories.

Mild climate
Mild all year: around 17 °C by day in January, about 24 °C in August. The sheltered west side stays sunny while the north lies under trade-wind clouds.

Late January to February: Puntagorda celebrates the “Fiesta del Almendro en Flor”, recognised as a Canarian cultural asset of touristic interest.
